Seven Sisters Falls in November—A Tale of Drought Amidst a Rain-Laden Legacy
Cherrapunji is celebrated as one of the wettest regions on Earth. It is synonymous with lush greenery, heavy downpours, and abundant waterfalls. Among its treasures is the iconic Seven Sisters Falls, a marvel where seven streams traditionally tumble down a towering cliff. However, when I visited this enchanting site in November, it presented an unexpected and starkly different reality.
Contrary to its rain-drenched reputation, the skies were clear, and the air was dry. Only one of the seven falls carried water, its delicate stream glistening in the sunlight as it descended. The remaining cliffs stood bare, their streaked rocks telling silent tales of the monsoon’s departure.
While many visitors dream of seeing all seven falls in full flow, this moment of scarcity has its charm. It spoke of the cyclical rhythm of nature—the ebb and flow of life—and reminded me that even the most abundant places experience seasons of rest. The grandeur of the cliffs, the serene landscape, and the tranquillity of the dry season were uniquely mesmerising, offering a perspective rarely associated with Cherrapunji.
While this visit to the Seven Sisters Falls may not have been as I imagined, it was a beautiful reminder that nature’s wonders are not defined solely by their abundance but also by their ability to inspire in all forms. Cherrapunji, in its quiet November guise, revealed a side of itself that is less celebrated but equally profound.
